Just Another Day on the Ferry It’s just another day on the ferry Just another day on the ferry Someone is playing with his mobile game Clicking and buzzing gonna drive me insane Someone is talking so loud on the phone All the way out and all the way home Put on your headphones and turn it up loud Drown out the noise away from the crowd and free It’s just another day on the ferry Just another day on the ferry Guy behind’s got his knees in my back One day I’ll turn round and give him a whack Someone is clipping his nails, it’s a treat saved for the ferry so he won’t have to sweep Finish your breakfast and wrap it up neat Put on the floor or under your seat, and go It’s just another day on the ferry Just another day on the ferry First Ferry is happy to welcome you aboard No smoking please it’s for your own good Life jackets, safety belts, some other things Please put your rubbish into the bins It’s just another day on the ferry Just another day on the ferry Get in to Central and queue by the door Someone walks round you to get off before … you let her go first, she’s in hurry Get out the door and she walks so slowly Walk up the ramp and get out of there Out of the crowd and out of the pier and free It’s just another day on the ferry Just another day on the ferry

Retirement Song I’m home, home as much as I can be Yes I’m home, sitting on my balcony I ain’t got no deadlines, no bosses chasing after me. I had a job but they laid me off Now I work for myself or don’t if I want I’m free, there ain’t nobody chasing me I got some money in the bank and a wifey looking after me Now, all you people working won’t you listen to my song You don’t need to those bosses, just to get along I’m free, there ain’t nobody chasing me I got some money in the bank and a wifey looking after me I’m home, home as much as I can be Yes I’m home and I’m free and I’m sitting on my balcony I ain’t got no bosses, no deadlines looming over me.

Cantonese Blues With Cantonese, I’m on my knees I can’t get it into my head I’m trying and I’m crying Leaning Cantonese is a bitch. The tones go up, the tones go down The tones go round and round Can’t get them right, try as I might Leaning Cantonese is a bitch. Hong Kong Chinese, oh help me please. Don’t always speak to me in English. Don’t use sign language or some such shit-ch Leaning Cantonese is a bitch. Yeah, Cantonese, it’s such a breeze It blows right through my head I can’t get better; I’m still a beginner Leaning Cantonese is a bitch. Sometimes I try, and people reply I speak Cantonese but they speak English. They look at my face, and see my race Leaning Cantonese is a bitch. So you Chinese, oh help me please. Don’t always speak to me in English. Don’t use sign language or some such shit-ch Leaning Cantonese is a bitch.

Cross the harbour, a Wan Chai bar A thousand dollars, won't get you far Out on the street, cruise along Meet that man, same old song “Copy watch, want a suit Massagee or prostitute Come my place in Chung King Mansions, Smuggle gold, just imagine, just imagine!” Lan Kwai Fong is the place to go My friends are there, yeah all gweilo Club 64, not there today But here's that man, he won't go away “Tailor’s shop, buy a suit Want to score or prostitute Come my place in Chung King Mansions Smuggle gold, just imagine, just imagine!” Back again, in Nathan Road Tsim Sha Tsui, yeah that's my home Getting on, feel like a king But meet that man, saying those damn things “Copy watch, buy a suit Massagee, prostitute Come my place in Chung King Mansions, Smuggle gold, just imagine, just imagine!”

Ubiquitous TV There’s a TV on the ferry, and in the waiting hall TV on the buses and TV on the wall TV in the canteen, TV by the lift TV in the corridor, you start to get my drift? If you want to watch the TV, you can do it all the time But if you don't want to watch it, you're stepping out of line TV on the campus, see them on the way Nothing much is on them, there's nothing much to say TVs show infotainment, watch them while you wait Extra long advertisements will keep you up to date See the TVs everywhere; see the people stop and stare If you don't like it, you can't hide anywhere This one has an advert for turning off the light Why not turn off the TV and get it out of sight TVs in the restaurant, watch them while you eat TV almost everywhere, you can watch that silver screen If you want to watch the TV, you can do it all the time But if you don't want to watch it, you're stepping out of line

Can’t Do it by Myself Come, around me, you know I need your help Can’t do it alone; I can’t make it by myself Oh please listen to me; you know I can’t make it on my own Oh you magic woman, you’re everything to me. I need you now I can’t make it on my own. I know I didn’t help you, but you wanted it that way When you pushed me out the door and sent me on my way I don’t want to cause you trouble, but you know I can’t make it all alone Oh you magic woman, you’re everything to me. I need you now I can’t make it on my own. Something I’ve always known is I’m not very good I need someone to help me, so help me if you would Oh, please … you know I can’t make it all alone Oh you magic woman, please come back to me. I need you now I can’t make it on my own.

about

Another Day on the Ferry by Nick Florent

“Someone is playing with his mobile game, clicking and buzzing gonna drive me insane,” so starts the first verse of the opening song. It’s “just another day on the ferry” for a commuter from Cheung Chau, a small, somewhat eccentric island some ways away from the busy streets of Hong Kong. There aren’t any cars on the island – but a lot of bicycles, which are the curse of Cheung Chau according to multi-instrumentalist bluesman and resident Nick Florent.

Many of the songs focus on distinctive details of Hong Kong life. The tailor’s shops that proliferate around Nathan Road – a tourist hub – are victims of Nick’s acerbic wit along with Chungking Mansions, the infamous building where you can buy anything: “Copy watch, buy a suit; massagee, or prostitute” runs the chorus.

Nick’s keen eye for the oddities of expat life also homes in on overzealous photographers, telephone zombies, ‘walking straight at me,’ and the ubiquitous TVs – found in most restaurants, by lifts, in waiting rooms, and yes, even on the Cheung Chau ferries!

If you’ve experienced these things, you’ll enjoy the songs. If you haven’t, you’ll acquire some keen insights into Hong Kong life by listening to them.
